Maria Island, TAS

Jeez, you can never tell how to pronounce place names in Australia.  They either drop letters or add ones that aren’t there.  This place is actually Mariah Island in normal English. There is a 30 min, $45 ferry ride to this National Park.  You need to pay for a parks pass on top of that, unless you have purchased a Holiday Pass. The island has a varied history – 2x penal institutions, an agricultural period and a cement works.  Now it’s a National Park trying to introduce Tasmanian Devils.

As a way point on the way from Freycinet we stopped at Mayfield Beach for an overnight in the free camp.  Great spot with ocean views.

Smooth sailing on the ferry from Triabunna. On arrival at the Island stop at the information building for laminated information cards for walks you want to do.
The famous attraction at Maria Island is the Painted Rocks, and best viewed at low tide. How amazing that the day we happened to be here there was a 10:30am low tide, exactly when we arrived after the 45 min walk from the wharf.
Then we did the Fossil Cliff walk.  Nice walk with good views.  The cliffs were spectacular but we didn’t see any dinosaurs.  We managed to dodge a thunderstorm but the island wasn’t so lucky – a lightning strike to the south started a bush fire.
We didn’t see much of the advertised “abundant wild life”, apart from geese.  1x Welcome Wombat and 1x Tasmanian Devil – but they were both stuffed. I guess you need to stay the night to see them come out at dusk.
Dr Who visits here too…

After returning on the ferry make sure you treat yourself to the local fish and chip – excellent! And pick up some Maria Island smoked mussels from the IGA, delish.

Nice day trip. I patted a wombat outside the “tea rooms” and got told off by one of the guides. The painted rocks are spectacular. I like your collage of photos too.
